St. Joseph Cathedral Diocesan Shrine, Diocese of Butuan

Diocese of Butuan
St. Joseph Cathedral Diocesan Shrine

When the Diocese of Cagayan was created in 1933, Butuan was part of it, along with Surigao, Tandag, and Malaybalay, comprising the entire northern half of Mindanao.  Six years later, the Diocese of Surigao was erected and Butuan was placed under its ecclesiastical jurisdiction headed by Bp. Juan Vrakking, MSC. The Second Vatican Council in the early 1960s brought about the aggiornamento, breathing fresher air into the Church.  In 1967, following the lead of the Vatican II, the Diocese of Butuan was established by virtue of the Apostolic Constitution Eodem Officio, written by Pope Paul VI.  Fr. Carmelo DF Morelos, a procurator of the Collegio Filippino in Rome, was appointed its first bishop in 1967.

When Bp. Morelos was nominated to the Archdiocese of Zamboanga in 1994, Butuan was placed under the pastoral care of Bp. Juan de Dios M. Pueblos.  He led the diocese as its shepherd until his death in 2017. Incidentally, a few months later, his Auxiliary Bishop Zacarias C. Jimenez succumbed to a lingering illness.  While waiting for Vatican’s nomination, the Diocese of Butuan is entrusted to the care of Abp. Antonio J. Ledesma, SJ as its Apostolic Administrator.

March 25, 2019, 6pm, and also The Feast of the Annunciation of the Lord to Mary. Pope Francis announced the appointment of Rev. Fr Cosme "Meng" Almedilla as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Butuan.

June 25, 2019, the people of Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur witnessed the Episcopal Ordination and Installation of the 3rd Bishop of the See of Butuan MOST REVEREND COSME DAMIAN RACINES ALMEDILLA, D.D.

SM believes in enriching the community’s spiritual needs with the recent launching of the Chapel of San Pedro Calungsod at the mall’s top level.

Surrounded by the Skypark with its lush greens and water features, the chapel is the perfect place to stop, rest, and reflect in this fast paced city. It is named in honor of San Pedro Calungsod, the first Visayan saint, who is considered a role model for the youth. Martyred in Guam for his missionary work in 1672, he was beatified by Blessed Pope John Paul II on March 5, 2000 and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI at Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City on Oct. 21, 2012.

Located at the mall’s top level, it gives worshippers a feeling of being closer to God. Shaped like an abstract cave, it has a semi-circular opening that evokes images of the cave of the Resurrection. Gracefully designed ribs lead to the backlit altar-front, inviting the faithful inside for reflection and prayer. The wood and marble finishes give the chapel a simple natural feel. It also has 14 stations of the Cross, a statue of San Pedro Calungsod and the Virgin Mary.
The Chapel of San Pedro Calungsod’s dedication ceremony began with the unveiling of the marker by SM Chairman Mr. Henry Sy, Sr, Mrs. Felicidad T. Sy and their family with Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano. Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara, D.D. led the Solemn Dedication within the Mass with members of the Sy family and their guests. The Bishop later presided over the installation of its first chaplain Rev. Fr. Ronnie Samaniego.

Capping the event was a MOA signing by SM Prime Holdings President Mr. Hans T. Sy and SM Hotels and Convention Corporations President Ms. Elizabeth T. Sy with Rev. Fr. Mariano Baranda, chancellor of the Diocese of Pasig. Quietly elegant, the Chapel of San Pedro Calungsod can seat almost 300 people.

Shrine of Mary Queen of Peace, Our Lady of EDSA (EDSA Shrine)

The EDSA Shrine, located at the crossroads of Epifanio de los Santos (EDSA) Avenue and Ortigas Avenue in Quezon City, is formally known as the Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace (Our Lady of EDSA), It is dedicated to Our Lady who has miraculously interceded to oust the dictatorship in a peaceful and bloodless uprising that is now world renowned as the People Power Revolution of 1986. On December 15, 1989, the EDSA Shrine was established with then Rev. Fr. Socrates B. Villegas as Rector. Since then, the Church has grown with the help of volunteers who now have formally organized themselves into the EDSA Shrine Community. His Eminence Jaime Cardinal Sin described the EDSA Shrine as Holy Ground when another miracle, the second peaceful People Power took place in January 2001. With the help of the Blessed Mother and Santo Niño, the people’s prayer for a moral leadership was answered. A Holy Ground marker was inaugurated at the EDSA Shrine on February 25, 2001 during the 15th anniversary of the first EDSA People Power.
